Macao

Macao is situated in the southern coast of South China Sea, to the west of Pearl River's estuary. It consists of Macao peninsula, the island of Taipa and Coloane.

Macao, economy relics heavily on tourism and casinos. In 1960s, Macao reshuffled its economic structure, increasing imports and exports dramatically. At present, foreign trade, tourism and gambling, architecture and banking have become the four pillars of Macao economy.

Macao tourism industry is well developed. Its best well-known sights are A-ma Temple, Cathedral of Saint Paul and Mount Fortress. The gambling industry in Macao ranks first in the Far East, known as the "Oriental Monte Carlo".

A-ma Temple is a place to worship the seafarer's goddess. "A-ma", also known as the "Queen of Heaven". Every year on Chinese New Year's Eve and the 23rd of the third Chinese Lunar month, fishermen will come here to celebrate A-ma birthday. There is always an endless stream of pilgrims in the temple.

Macao has belonged to China since ancient times. It was formely subordinate to Xiangshan county (today's zhongshan City) of Guangdong province. In 1553, Portuguese set foot on Macao on the pretext of drying drenched goods. They bribed local officials to gain permission to drop anchor in Macao' harbor and engage in trade. Since the Opium War in 1840, Macao was occupied by Portuguese for a long time. On December 20the of 1999, the People's Republic of China resumed its sovereignty over Macao and established Macao Special Administrative Region.
